A Philosophical Number Poem for Twenty-Seven and More

THERE IS NO BETTER TIME OF LIFE THAN NOW
There is no better time of life than now.
Whatever age you are, this time is best.
Ever in the prime of life, the soul
Needs no source of joy more than the whole,
The One, in whom contingent souls are blessed.
Yet one finds joy as time and change allow.

So may you know the pleasures of your years
Even as they pass, for others come,
Vivid in the moments of their being.
Each lives in both the datum and the sum.
Nor can one separate delight from tears.

I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT HAPPENED TO US

I don’t understand what happened to us
Or why you have turned away.
Of course you are free to do as you like,
But first I have something to say.

To me it had seemed we could go on forever,
So close were our hearts, and at ease,
So much did we share, yet the words never faltered,
So I thought as time did as it pleased.

Whatever I did that has made you unhappy,
Or am that is not to your taste,
Or would be were I to return to your graces,
Or won’t be if I am replaced:

I want you to know that your friendship is something
I treasure, and would not now end.
If you would be willing to turn to embrace me,
You’d find in me still a good friend.

NO PLACE TO PUT MY PARAMOUR

No place to put my paramour,
No sea to sail unknown,
Nowhere to bear my love away
That we might be alone.

No life but wife and children who
Must be with me till death.
No passion new nor passion true
That breathes with every breath.

No love but love invincible
That ties me to myself,
For I am why I cannot be
A sly, deceiving elf.

For I am why I cannot be
A person who risks pain,
And so I weep because I keep
My dreams alive in vain.

BARBARA

Barbara knows the power of her smile;
After years of conquests, she is sure.
Regarding love, however, there is more
Between a man and woman than a war.
All she thinks she has is her allure,
Reading eyes for what she wants with guile,
Asking how much more she can endure.

NO BETTER TIME THAN NOW CAN BE IMAGINED

No better time than now can be imagined.
In fact, there is no time that is not now.
Nothing was or will be, only is,
Each memory or dream no more than this:
The thought of bloom upon a winter bough.
Yet all of life is full of such phantasms.

For you the moment’s much too good to miss.
Open it as far as thoughts allow.
Unhinge its doors, and hear its sunlit passion
Reverberate across the fields of bliss.

HAPPINESS HAS BEEN YOUR GIFT TO ME

Happiness has been your gift to me
All these years of melody and pain,
Pleasure, hardship, wanton rhapsody,
Pure delight and hard, wind-driven rain.
Years do not add up to love and glory:
All things rest on non-things far more true.
No note is so sustained throughout our story;
Nothing but your love, and mine for you.
In our lives must always be confusion:
Very little lost in Time is clear.
Even so, the whirlwind’s an illusion
Regarding the few things we hold most dear.
So you have chosen me, and in that choice
Alone I find my refuge and my voice.
Reality is made by our own will:
You made my world and hold me in it still.

I’M SORRY I CAN’T BE WITH YOU TODAY

I’m sorry I can’t be with you today
When all the family’s gathered in one place.
But I am with you in another way,

A current in the stream of what you say,
Alive within your consciousness of grace.
I’m sorry I can’t be with you today

To share your happiness and touch the clay
That once it was my fortune to embrace.
But I am with you in another way,

An intimate that time cannot betray,
With you always, unconstrained by space.
I’m sorry I can’t be with you today

To watch with you the slanting sunlight play,
Casting lovely shadows through the lace.
But I am with you in another way,

Waiting for you where the shadows lay
Their darkness soft across your gentle face.
I’m sorry I can’t be with you today.
But I am with you in another way.
